I had my first studio forty years ago on the front
porch of my family's California bungalow home.
Working there I had a homemade potter's wheel and sculpted clay by hand when I was a teenager. Beautiful hip and intelligent local bohemians would come to visit, rock music played loud on the home stereo and free love filled the atmosphere.
I am inspired by Jeff Koons, Andy Warhol,Frank Gehry, Marcel Duchamp, Jimi Hendrix, Hello Kitty, The Sixties, Peace and Love, Pop Art, Modern Art, Contemporary Design , Danish Modernism, Modern Modernism, Minimalism, Post Modernism, Ism Ism and Post-ism.
Growing up in Los Angeles I was exposed to a wild array of multi cultural influences, art, music and people. There are so many sorts of diverse things going on in Los Angeles from surf culture to the defense industry, from centers of technology to the center of Scientology. In my work I try to synthesize these influences ranging from the heritage of the American crafts movement to California funk ceramics and pop art.
This week I am obsessed by "The Shock of the New" and Nonny De La Pena's virtual reality journalism. Today it was "how to build a shed". Last week it was Albert Einstein and a French film director. Next week I plan on focusing on on world economics and linguistic theory.
Venice Clay is "for real".
All the pieces I offer at Venice Clay are my original designs. My goal is to produce ceramics that are well crafted, intelligent and humorous - suitable for anything from a modernist and craftsman style homes or personal Zen retreats.
VeniceClay Made Local: Shipped Global:
Everything is personally handmade made by the artist Gary Steinborn and his studio associate Deanna Watkins. It's made in Clay in Venice California.
We make stuff with our hands, by hand, in our hands and clay gets on our hands. We start with bags of raw clay and end up with art. What can I say it's really crazy! To quote a rap star friend "Our lives are dope and we do dope things".
I hope the clay does the talking.
Signed by the Artiste:
It's from me to you so I make it and sign it and send it out. So I hope the energy vibrations transmit and the feng shui emits it.
The Buddha cat figurines as well as all the other designs are original artworks copyrighted by Gary Steinborn. Our vases are new designs by Gary, some inspired by the work of arts and craft factories such as Grueby, Teco and Rookwood.
Colors and Glazes:
All of our artwork is available in 24 matt glaze colors. In addition the figurines are available in celedon and white crackle finishes.
The sizes range from little puppies and kittens a few inches high up to sculptures and vases thirteen inches tall.
